Why We Created This Podcast and Why It Matters to Every Dog Owner
By David Harris
Founder & Master Trainer
Protection Dog Sales
After nearly four decades of training dogs, one question has stayed with me:
How can we help more people enjoy better lives with their dogs?
That question is the reason we created the All Things Dawg Podcast.
For years, Protection Dog Sales has had the privilege of helping families around the world develop extraordinary relationships with their dogs. Along the way we've trained thousands of dogs, worked with countless breeds, solved behavioral problems, and developed what many consider the finest Home Raised / Family Trained personal protection dogs in the world.
But there is one thing we've always believed.
Knowledge should be shared.
Giving Back to the Dog Community
The purpose of this podcast isn't to sell dogs.
It isn't to sell training.
It isn't to convince you that one product is better than another.
The purpose is much simpler.
We want to give back.
Every week people ask us questions about their dogs.
- Which flea treatment is safest?
- Should I vaccinate?
- Why won't my dog come when called?
- Why does my Terrier dig?
- Why does my Hound ignore me?
- How do I choose the right breed?
Rather than answering these questions one family at a time, we decided to create a place where everyone can learn together.
Whether you own a Chihuahua, a Labrador, a German Shepherd, a Golden Retriever, or a mixed breed rescue, this podcast is for you.
Practical Experience Matters
There is no shortage of opinions in the dog world.
Unfortunately, there is also no shortage of misinformation.
My goal isn't to repeat theories.
It's to share what nearly forty years of practical experience has taught me.
Since 1987 I've had the opportunity to train dogs from virtually every breed imaginable and work with owners from every walk of life.
Some dogs needed confidence.
Some needed boundaries.
Some needed motivation.
Others needed understanding.
One of the greatest lessons I learned early in my career was this:
There is no single training method that works perfectly for every dog or every owner.
Every dog is an individual.
Every family is different.
Great trainers recognize that and adjust accordingly.
The Biggest Mistake Dog Owners Make
One of the most common problems I see isn't aggression.
It isn't stubbornness.
It isn't dominance.
It's unrealistic expectations—or sometimes expectations that are far too low.
Many owners simply don't realize what their dogs are capable of learning.
I've watched people become genuinely surprised that a Chihuahua can stay on command while its owner walks away.
I've heard people say,
"My dog could never do that."
My response is almost always the same.
Have you ever tried?
Dogs often exceed our expectations when we finally give them the opportunity.
Training Gives Dogs Better Lives
People often ask me why I'm so passionate about training.
The answer has nothing to do with ribbons, titles, or obedience competitions.
I train dogs because training improves their quality of life.
Think about it.
A well-trained dog gets invited places.
A well-trained dog gets to travel.
A well-trained dog spends more time with its family.
A well-trained dog earns trust.
That creates a wonderful cycle.
The better your dog behaves...
...the more time you spend together.
The more time you spend together...
...the better your dog becomes.
Training isn't about taking freedom away.
Training creates freedom.
Understanding Breed Purpose
One of the biggest themes we'll discuss on the podcast is understanding why your dog behaves the way it does.
Every breed was developed for a purpose.
Terriers were bred to hunt vermin.
So they dig.
Hounds were bred to follow scent.
So they naturally want to hunt.
Sight hounds were bred to chase moving objects.
Retrievers were developed to work cooperatively with people.
German Shepherds were bred to solve problems alongside their handlers.
When owners understand what generations of selective breeding have programmed into their dogs, frustrating behaviors suddenly begin to make sense.
Understanding instinct doesn't excuse unwanted behavior.
It explains it.
And once you understand it, you can train around it.
Balanced Training
At Protection Dog Sales we've never believed in extremes.
Training isn't about endless treats.
It also isn't about endless corrections.
Dogs learn through communication.
They learn through motivation.
They learn through timing.
They learn through reinforcement.
And yes...
Sometimes they learn through fair, appropriate consequences.
Balanced training means using the right tool at the right time for the individual dog standing in front of you.
Raising Expectations
One of our goals with All Things Dawg is to raise your expectations.
Not unrealistic expectations.
Healthy expectations.
Your dog is capable of more than you probably realize.
With proper development, clear communication, consistency, and patience, amazing things become possible.
That doesn't mean every dog becomes a world champion.
It means every dog can become the very best version of itself.
